Julian Alps of Slovenia & Friuli

The Slovenian and Friuli Julian Alps are one of the last hidden gems of the European Alps, jagged limestone mountains rising straight up from the road and alpine pastures. Bubbling brooks and rushing rivers, pine forests stretching as far as the eye can see. The alpine flora here is in amazing abundance and it is possible to see many wild mountain animals.

The Julian Alps are unspoilt and almost unknown to the British and French trekkers, one thing you notice when you come here is how clean and unpolluted it is. The word to describe the Julian Alps really is Pristine; It is almost how the French Alps must have been fifty years ago.

BigSmileAdventures trekking holiday here is very special. We stay in two self-catering apartments in the centre of Kranjska Gora the village in the heart of the mountains.

It is a small village with all the amenities that are needed including a range of bars and restaurants, local produce shops, supermarket etc.

All of our treks are day based and each night we return to the village -apart from the Thursday and Friday when we drive over to the Italian side in Friuli where we trek up to a high mountain Refugio.

We stay over night at the Refugio and on the Friday morning if the weather is good we ascend to a big col to get the highest point of the week and to visit an old World War 1 tunnel and gallery before returning to the Refugio to pick up our stuff and head back down to the valley to catch our transfer and returned to Kranjska Gora for your last night in Slovenia.

The week is based on a land only tour, you must make your own way to Kranjska Gora and it is on a bed and breakfast arrangement you must buy your own lunches and dinners.

When at the Refugio you are provided with a dormitory bed, dinner and breakfast, drinks are not included.

Getting to Kranjska Gora is very easy, Flights from the UK to the capital of Slovenia – Llubijlana are very cheap. From the airport it is a short transfer to the bus station in the capital where you can catch a bus directly to Kranjska Gora (approx. 2hrs) where BigSmileAdventures will meet you.

  1. Hi Gary I am Joe, we met this morning at the Luna di Agerola. I am from Milano and I am a fan of mountain trekking and hiking around the Alps and the Appenini. I am a member of the CAI (Italian Alpine Club) and every time I can, I leave for a trek everywhere. Last year I was in Iceland for a 6 days trekking called “Landmannalaugar” and it was wonderful, beautiful landscapes and great glaciers. I would like to know you better, if possible oduring a trekking I wish. I hope to hear you as soon as possible to know your future treks programs. Bye Gary.
